This podcast talks about the real world challenge that comes with working in sports media, especially for newcomers trying to break into the scene. One of the biggest obstacles is the communication required to reach athletes and coaches. Instead of contacting them directly, reporters often have to work through middlemen, which can slow down the process and make access challenging. A solution this podcasts talk about is building strong relationships with Sports Information Directors.
Another major challenge discussed is the limited number of press credentials available for games and events. This is especially true for big games, which perhaps hundreds of outlets and reporters want to cover. Competition for those spots can be high and it can be hard for newer journalists to get them. We talk about ways to improve your chances, including reaching out early to programs or schools to learn which events have openings and connecting with established media outlets that already have access.
The podcast also emphasizes the importance of confidence and professionalism. How you carry yourself matters. The saying, ‘fake it until you make it,’ is true. Even if you’re nervous, showing confidence and being respectful can help you build credibility and grow within the field.
